RYLA- Rotary Youth Leadership Award
*A week. *Dartmoor. *Adventurous activities. *Team building. *Leadership training.
An award sponsored by Rotary and for young people aged 16 to 18.
In one example, Exmoor Rotary Club sponsored Oliver Shelley to take part in the RYLA course at the end of July. To gain the certificate, Oli had quite an experience!
There were 24 lucky young people on the course based on the edge of Dartmoor (see below).
As well as some indoor lectures, the majority of the time was spent in groups undertaking a range of adventurous activities, many of which involved getting very wet! All the activities were supervised by highly qualified instructors to ensure not only safety, but the maximum benefit to those taking part.
To name a few of the activities: rock climbing, kayaking, gorge surfing, abseiling, death climb, mountain biking, sailing, camping, and raft building - in fact, quite a week!
Sponsorship by the club covered all the costs involved such as accommodation, food, equipment, special clothing, etc.
